Patrick Colm Hogan: What Literature Teaches Us about Emotion

What Literature Teaches Us about Emotion

Description

Literature provides us with otherwise unavailable insights into the ways emotions are produced, experienced and enacted in human social life. It is particularly valuable because it deepens our comprehension of the mutual relations between emotional response and ethical judgment. These are the central claims of Hogan's study, which carefully examines a range of highly esteemed literary works in the context of current neurobiological, psychological, sociological and other empirical research. In this work, he explains the value of literary study for a cognitive science of emotion and outlines the emotional organization of the human mind. He explores the emotions of romantic love, grief, mirth, guilt, shame, jealousy, attachment, compassion and pity - in each case drawing on one work by Shakespeare and one or more works by writers from different historical periods or different cultural backgrounds, such as the eleventh-century Chinese poet Li Ch'ing-Chao and the contemporary Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka.

Richard H. Thayer,Merlin Dorfman: Software Requirements Engineering

Software Requirements Engineering

Description

This new edition describes current best practices in requirements engineering with a focus primarily on software systems but also on systems that may contain other elements such as hardware or people. The text consists of original papers, written by experts in the field, plus revisions of papers from the first edition. The book begins with an introduction to current issues and the basic terminology of the software requirements engineering process. The text covers the five phases of software requirements engineering -- elicitation, analysis, specification, verification, and management -- that need to be performed to reduce the chance of software failure. The chapters look at the science and discipline that concern establishing and documenting software requirements. The book covers the process through which developers' and users' discover, review, articulate, and understand the users' needs and the constraints on the software and development activity. It analyzes the users' needs to arrive at a definition of their software requirements. In addition, the papers examine software requirements and the need to clearly document and precisely record each requirement. It also looks at verification to ensure that the software requirements specifications are in compliance with the system requirements and conforms to document standards. The last phase addressed by the book is software requirements management including planning and controlling of all these activities.

Bernard Stiegler,Daniel Ross: What Makes Life Worth Living: On Pharmacology

What Makes Life Worth Living: On Pharmacology

Description

In the aftermath of the First World War, the poet Paul Valery wrote of a crisis of spirit , brought about by the instrumentalization of knowledge and the destructive subordination of culture to profit. Recent events demonstrate all too clearly that that the stock of mind, or spirit, continues to fall. The economy is toxically organized around the pursuit of short-term gain, supported by an infantilizing, dumbed-down media. Advertising technologies make relentless demands on our attention, reducing us to idiotic beasts, no longer capable of living. Spiralling rates of mental illness show that the fragile life of the mind is at breaking point. Underlying these multiple symptoms is consumer capitalism, which systematically immiserates those whom it purports to liberate. Returning to Marx s theory, Stiegler argues that consumerism marks a new stage in the history of proletarianization. It is no longer just labour that is exploited, pushed below the limits of subsistence, but the desire that is characteristic of human spirit. The cure to this malaise is to be found in what Stiegler calls a pharmacology of the spirit . Here, pharmacology has nothing to do with the chemical supplements developed by the pharmaceutical industry. The pharmakon, defined as both cure and poison, refers to the technical objects through which we open ourselves to new futures, and thereby create the spirit that makes us human. By reference to a range of figures, from Socrates, Simondon and Derrida to the child psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, Stiegler shows that technics are both the cause of our suffering and also what makes life worth living.

Timothy Keller: Hidden Christmas: The Surprising Truth Behind the Birth of Christ

Hidden Christmas: The Surprising Truth Behind the Birth of Christ

Description

One of bestselling New York pastor Tim Keller's most popular Christmas sermons, expanded and published in a beautiful gift edition. The New Testament begins not with a dramatic narrative or lofty poetry but with a genealogy. Provocatively, Matthew's gospel includes women in Jesus' family line - something that wasn't customary in an ancient culture, where women were largely powerless and uninfluential. In this surprising take on the Christmas story, Tim Keller reveals how, by focusing on the women in Jesus' birth narratives, a colourful, scandalous, and refreshing tale of grace emerges.

This groundbreaking, international bestseller, first published in 1960, couples profound insights into the hidden history of humanity and our perceptions of reality with the scientific evidence that supports the existence of paranormal activity, telepathy, and extraterrestrial communications. The first book to explore in depth the Nazi fascination with the occult, Pauwels and Bergier also broke new ground with their study of pyramidology, alchemy and its close kinship with atomic energy, and the possibility of a widespread mutation of humanity that would herald the dawn of a new age for the Ten Days That Shook the World ebook pdf earth. Their study of secret societies, starting with the Rosicrucians, suggests that such changes are actively being pursued in the present day by a conspiracy of the most spiritually and intellectually advanced members of the human race.

Ten Days That Shook the World pdf

John Reed: Ten Days That Shook the World

Ten Days That Shook the World

Description

"Brilliant and entertaining."--"The New York Times Book Review" This first-person chronicle by John Reed, a legendary journalist who was present at the flash point of the Russian Revolution in 1917, provides an intense and informative eyewitness account of one of the greatest events of the twentieth century. Capturing the spirit of those heady days of excitement and idealism, Reed's true-to-life account follows many of the prominent Bolshevik leaders, as well as vividly capturing the mood of the masses. Verbatim reports of speeches by leaders, and comments of bystanders -- set against an idealized backdrop of the proletariat united with soldiers, sailors, and peasants -- are balanced by passionate narratives describing the fall of the provisional government, the assault on the Winter Palace, and Lenin's seizure of power. Accompanied by contemporaneous photographs, this gripping record by a western journalist has been acclaimed worldwide since its first publication in 1919. Endorsed by Lenin as a "truthful and most vivid exposition," the work was the basis for the Academy Award-winning 1981 film "Reds."

Charlotte Aull Davies: Reflexive Ethnography: A Guide to Researching Selves and Others

Reflexive Ethnography: A Guide to Researching Selves and Others

Description

Reflexive Ethnography is a unique guide to ethnographic research for students of anthropology and related disciplines. It provides practical and comprehensive guidance to ethnographic research methods, but also encourages students to develop a critical understanding of the philosophical basis of ethnographic authority. Davies examines why reflexivity, at both personal and broader cultural levels, should be integrated into ethnographic research and discusses how this can be accomplished for a variety of research methods. This revised and updated second edition includes: * a new chapter on internet-based research and 'interethnography' * chapters on selection of topics and methods, data collection and analysis, and ethics and politics of research * practical advice on writing up ethnographic study * new and updated research examples. Postmodernist relativism can lead to an over-emphasis on reflexivity that denies the possibility of social research. Reflexive Ethnography utilises postmodernist insights - incorporation of different standpoints, exposure of the intellectual tyranny of meta-narratives - but proposes that reflexive ethnographic research be undertaken from a realist perspective. Reflexive Ethnography will help students to use and understand ethnographic research practices that fully incorporate reflexivity without abandoning claims to develop valid knowledge of social reality.

This CD recording by virtuoso pianist Valery Lloyd-Watts contains model performances of all pieces in the Suzuki Piano School Volumes 1 and 2. Valery Lloyd-Watts studied at the Conservatory of Music in Toronto and the Royal College of Music in London. She earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin, where she studied with Paul Badura-Skoda. She co-authored the text Studying Suzuki Piano: More than Music, which was endorsed by Dr. Suzuki. In addition to her recordings of the complete Suzuki piano repertoire and other masterwork literature, she has been heard on radio broadcasts for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and National Public Radio (NPR). #1 bestselling author and speaker Joyce Meyer offers a pocket-sized devotional to help readers seek God at the end of their day. Many people start their day off with a few minutes of prayer and Bible study, often with a Reflexive Ethnography: A Guide to Researching Selves and Others download ebook pdf devotion. But how many of them take the time at night to spend a moment with God after their hurried bedtime prayers? Now, as a companion to STARTING YOUR DAY RIGHT, Joyce Meyer offers ENDING YOUR DAY RIGHT, a daily devotional aimed at helping readers take time to acknowledge and give thanks for God's presence throughout their day, and to ask for his continued care throughout the night. Topics include: The keys to letting go at the end of the day; Remembering to count our blessings; Living secure in God's love; Realizing our dreams and hopes; Giving thanks for the things we have.

Sandra Boynton: Mom's Family Desk Planner 2017

Mom's Family Desk Planner 2017

Description

This is Mom s portable personal assistant, perfectly sized for a desk or tote and packed with organizational punch. On the righthand side of each weekly spread, Mom s Family Desk Planner features a roomy grid with two write-in columns one for Mom s schedule and one for the rest of the family s. On the left-hand side is a full-color illustration that s joyfully, inimitably Boynton: piggies in bathing suits, grinning cats, hippos doing calisthenics, rock-star chickens. Running a full 17 months, it s guaranteed to make Mom s life easier and happier."

Ivan E. Coyote is a master storyteller and performer; her beautiful, funny stories about growing up queer in the Canadian north and living out loud on Canada's west coast have attracted big audiences whether gay, straight, or otherwise. "Missed Her" is Ivan's fifth story collection, following 2008's Lambda Literary Award-nominated "The Slow Fix," 2004's Ferro-Grumley Award-nominated "Loose End," and 2006's "Bow Grip," her novel that was named a Stonewall Honor Book by the American Library Association (now in development as a feature film). In her passionate and humourous new collection, Ivan takes readers on an intimate journey, both literal and figurative, through the experiences of her life: from her year spent in eastern Canada, to her return to the west coast, to travels inbetween. Whether discussing the politics of being a butch with a pet lapdog, or befriending an effeminate young man at a gay camp, or revisiting a forty-year old heartbreak around her grandmother's kitchen, Decolonization and the Decolonized ebook pdf Ivan traverses love, gender and identity with a wistful, perceptive eye, and a warmth that's as embracing and powerful as Ivan herself.

Albert Memmi,Robert Bonnono: Decolonization and the Decolonized

Decolonization and the Decolonized

Description

In this time of global instability and widespread violence, Albert Memmi author of the highly influential and groundbreaking work The Colonizer and the Colonized turns his attention to the present-day situation of formerly colonized peoples. In Decolonization and the Decolonized, Memmi expands his intellectual engagement with the subject and examines the manifold causes of the failure of decolonization efforts throughout the world. As outspoken and controversial as ever, Memmi initiates a much-needed discussion of the ex-colonized and refuses to idealize those who are too often painted as hapless victims. He shows how, in light of a radically changed world, it would be problematic and even irresponsible to continue to deploy concepts that were useful and valid during the period of anticolonial struggle.Decolonization and the Decolonized contributes to the most current debates on Islamophobia in France, the new anti-Semitism, and the unrelenting poverty gripping the African continent. Memmi, who is Jewish, was born and raised in Tunis, and focuses primarily on what he calls the Arab-Muslim condition, while also incorporating comparisons with South America, Asia, Black Africa, and the United States. In Decolonization and the Decolonized, Memmi has written that rare book a manifesto informed by intellect and animated by passion that will propel public analysis of the most urgent global issues to a new level.Albert Memmi is professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Paris, Nanterre, and the author of Racism (Minnesota, 1997).Robert Bononno, a teacher and translator, lives in New York City."

Dr. Mitchell Yass: The Pain Cure: The Yass Method for Diagnosing and Resolving Chronic Pain

The Pain Cure: The Yass Method for Diagnosing and Resolving Chronic Pain

Description

An estimated one billion of us across the globe suffer from chronic pain every day. Many of us have tried surgery only to find that it didn't relieve the pain. Some of us have been told? that we would have to take medication indefinitely, or, worse, that there was nothing left to try - we would simply have to live with the pain for the rest of our lives. This book shows that, in most cases, this simply isn't true, and that there is a way to resolve pain quickly and effectively without surgery or medication - The Yass Method. In the medical community today, most chronic pain is attributed to a structural problem, such as a herniated disc, a meniscal tear or arthritis. But what physical therapist Mitchell Yass has found is that in about 90 per cent of cases, the cause is actually a muscular weakness or imbalance - a condition that's easy to treat on your own. The Yass Method, developed through Mitchell's work with more than 14,000 patients, focuses on finding the true source of the pain and then using simple exercises to find lifelong relief. This book: reveals simple tests to determine whether your pain is muscular or structural. It contains easy, step-by-step exercises and routines to resolve muscular pain. It teaches you how to listen to your body and look at your pain in a constructive and logical way, and it empowers you to help yourself and achieve the pain-free life you're searching for.

A Lord of the Rings for the 21st century. Only a lot shorter. And funnier. And completely different. Conor thought he was an average teenager. OK, so his father only had one hand, spoke to him in ancient languages and was a bit on the eccentric side but, other than that, life was fairly normal. Until, that is, two Celtic warriors on horseback and wearing full armour appear at his front door and try to kill him. After that, things get pretty weird. Shadowmagic is a fantasy adventure for young adults (although grown ups will like it too). Written by one of the most popular magicians in the country it brings a fresh approach to the genre and will have a broad appeal beyond the fantasy sections. The Oversoul of the colony planet Harmony selected the family of Wetchik to carry it back to long-lost Earth. Now grown to a tribe in the years of their journey to Harmony's hidden starport, they are ready at last to take a ship to the stars. But from the beginning there has been bitter dispute between Nafai and Elemak, Wetchick's youngest son and his oldest. On board the starship "Bailica," the children of the tribe will become pawns in the struggle. Two factions are each making secret plans to awaken the children, and themselves, early from the cold-sleep capsules in which they will pass the long decades of the journey. Each The Reversal ebook pdf side hopes to gain years of influence on the minds of the children, winning their loyalty in the struggle for control of reclaimed Earth. But the Oversoul is truly in control of this journey. It has downloaded a complete copy of itself to the Ship's computers. And only Nafai, who wears the Cloak of the Starmaster by the Oversoul's command, really understand what this will mean to all their plans for the future.

Star Trek: The Original Series: Troublesome Minds

Description

First contact becomes an interstellar incident when the Starship Enterprise responds to a distress call from an unknown ship and saves the life of a man left to die by his own people. Berlis, a member of a telepathic species calling themselves the Isitri, claims not to know why those from his homeworld would want him dead. Captain James T. Kirk wants to believe him, but the damage is done: the Enterprise can neither leave the stranger to die nor turn him over to those who would kill him. Berlis seems harmless, but his people say he cannot live among them: his telepathy is so strong that their wills are subsumed to his. The same fear that compels the Isitri to seek the death of one of their own drives the neighbouring Odib people towards genocide. For every time an 'alpha mind'dominates the Isitri, the Odib pay the price in their own blood. With Spock becoming erratic under Berlis's influence, and the Isitri begging Kirk to allow them to destroy the man who threatens their existence, matters take a disastrous turn when Berlis makes his way back to Isitra -- and an entire world falls to his whims.
